Holistic Naturelle - Japanese Massage Therapy
Japanese Massage

Japanese Massage is a holistic form of treatment which involves the practitioner using their palms, thumbs, fingers and occasionally, elbows to balance the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual energies in the receiver's body.

Japanese Massage Therapy can help to manage the following physical symptoms and conditions:

    * Back pain
    * Stress
    * Stiff joints
    * Anxiety
    * Insomnia
    * Depression

What happens at a treatment

At your first treatment, the practitioner takes a brief case history which includes general questions about your health, any injuries or illnesses you might have, your diet, sleeping habits and working patterns.

You will also be asked what you would like to get out of the therapy session so that the practitioner can determine the main focus of the treatment.

The therapist may also perform a short diagnosis based on lightly palpating your abdominal area to determine which channels of your body will be worked on during the treatment.

The treatment will involve a - sometimes rhythmic - massage using the palms, thumbs and fingers.  It may also include rotations of the limbs and gentle stretches.

After the Treatment

Depending on which channels are worked on during a treatment, this form of massage can leave you feeling sleepy and relaxed or energised and motivated.  Some deep emotional feelings may rise to the surface.  Or some physical symptoms may temporarily recur as they leave the
body.

If possible, rest and drink water after a treatment.

Differences to Other Forms of Massage

This form of massage is usually carried out with the receiver lying on a futon at floor level or while seated in a chair.

No oils are used and the receiver remains fully clothed.

In Traditional or Swedish massage, the therapist works on a treatment table or chair rubbing and kneading the muscles and connective tissue to aid circulation and release muscle tension and pain.

With this style of Japanese massage, the therapist may work on the muscles, bones and joints and along specific channels or pressing particular acupoints in the body to aid the relief of physical and emotional symptoms.

It is similar to acupressure massage.  However an acupressure treatment focuses on selected acupoints used in acupuncture whereas this form of massage works on the whole channel pathway throughout the body (which includes the acupoints).

Preparing for your Treatment

As you remain fully clothed for your massage, it is important to where loose comfortable clothing.  You also need to wear socks.

If possible, avoid drinking alcohol on the day of your treatment and avoid eating a heavy meal at least two hours before the session.

This is a complementary therapy that is intended to complement - not replace - conventional medical healthcare.

If in doubt, please consult your healthcare provider.
